Multiply decimal feet by 12 for exact inches. Fraction columns use the selected precision; halfway values round away from zero.
03 — KNOW THE MATH
One conversion, in either direction.
The fraction is a rounded reading of the same length.
Multiply the decimal part of the feet by 12. Keep the whole feet, then round the remaining inches to your chosen fraction.
Add inches and the fraction, divide by 12, then add the feet. A repeating decimal is marked as approximate.
A tenth means one tenth of a foot: 0.1 ft = 1.2 in. Seven tenths is 0.7 ft = 8.4 in. A hundredth of a foot is 0.01 ft = 0.12 in. Enter the decimal feet value, not a count of tenths.
Divide the total inches by 12. For example, 6 inches ÷ 12 = 0.5 decimal feet. In the calculator, choose Feet & inches → decimal, set Feet to 0 and enter your inches. Add a fraction such as 3/8 in the Fraction field if needed.
One hundredth of a foot is 0.01 ft × 12 = 0.12 inches, approximately 1/8 inch when rounded to the nearest 1/16 inch. The tenths to inches conversion table includes every hundredth from 0.01 to 1.00 ft, with exact inches and rounded fractions.
A tape measure has fixed divisions. At 1/16-inch precision, 8.4 in rounds to 8 3/8 in (8.375 in). The difference is 0.025 in. Finer precision reduces the maximum rounding difference. Halfway values round away from zero.
Yes. Enter a minus sign in decimal feet, or choose Negative for feet & inches. The sign applies to the entire length. Inches above 12 carry into feet automatically, as do fractions that round across a foot boundary. Inputs support up to 8 decimal places and lengths up to 1,000,000 feet in either direction.
Both use the same 12-inches-per-foot formula. The table is generated from 0.01 ft increments, and fractions are reduced to their simplest form. Decimal results that cannot be shown exactly within 10 places are marked ≈. Calculations stay in your browser; this page has no analytics or account system.
